TPO banned in cosmetics from September 2025 – what you need to know
TPO will be withdrawn from cosmetics as early as September 2025. This ingredient, used for example in lash adhesives, has been classified as hazardous. Find out what the TPO ban means for your salon and discover safe solutions compliant with EU regulations.
From this article you will learn:
➤ What TPO is and how it works in cosmetic products.
➤ Why TPO is being banned by the European Union.
➤ What consequences apply for using TPO after 1 September 2025.
➤ Why you should switch to safe TPO-free lash adhesives now.
What is TPO?
TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide) is a photoinitiator used in UV-cured products such as hybrid nail polishes and lash adhesives. Its role is to trigger the curing process, ensuring faster bonding. Despite its effectiveness, TPO raises serious health concerns due to its potentially harmful effects.
Why is TPO being banned?
The European Union has classified TPO as a CMR substance category 1B – potentially carcinogenic, mutagenic, and toxic to reproduction. Based on this, it will be completely banned from cosmetic products from 1 September 2025.
This decision followed toxicological studies, including in Sweden, which confirmed negative effects on fertility and fetal development. TPO was placed on the SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) list, starting its phase-out from the beauty industry.
What are the consequences of using TPO after 1 September 2025?
Once the ban takes effect, selling or using cosmetics containing TPO will be illegal across the EU. For salon owners this means:
- Fines and penalties in case of inspection.
- Mandatory disposal of products containing TPO.
Buying discounted products with TPO before the ban is a risk – legally and financially. They cannot be legally used after the ban, and disposal may bring additional costs.
