Why Do Lashes Fall Out? – Seasonal Lash Shedding

During the autumn equinox, many clients start to notice increased lash loss in their extensions. It’s completely normal! Read on to learn what to advise your clients and how to minimise the effects of seasonal lash shedding.

Why do lashes fall out in autumn?

Early autumn can be a challenging time for the body. Many people notice not only increased lash shedding, but also weaker hair, duller skin, and even lower energy levels.

Hormonal changes

The shift from warm, sunny days to gloomy, cold and windy weather causes a drop in serotonin—the “happy hormone”—and a rise in melatonin, the hormone responsible for sleep. This often makes us feel more tired and moody. These changes also impact the health of our hair, skin and nails.

Fewer vitamins

In summer, our diets are naturally richer in vitamins from the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables, plus the added benefit of vitamin D from sunlight. In autumn, our eating habits tend to change, and we often get fewer nutrients, which can leave the body weakened.

It’s worth taking a vitamin D supplement during the darker months, as well as biotin, which significantly improves the condition of hair, skin and nails.

Weather changes

Less sunlight, colder temperatures, wind and dry air from indoor heating can all contribute to making lashes more brittle and prone to breakage.

If your client is worried about seasonal lash shedding, explain why it happens and what she can do to reduce lash loss.

Autumn and lash extensions

How should you approach lash styling during autumn?

  • Carefully assess the condition of the natural lashes — if you notice that they are particularly dry or brittle, avoid overloading them with heavy styling.
  • Infills — recommend that your client comes in for infills every 2–3 weeks.
  • Aftercare — during this season especially, remind your clients to follow proper aftercare for their lash extensions. Suggest a gentle makeup remover that is safe for extensions, along with a lash shampoo containing natural strengthening ingredients.

  • Pay attention to the glue — autumn brings changes in weather and the start of the heating season, which can significantly dry out the air in your salon. Use a hygrometer to check the humidity and temperature, and select your lash adhesive accordingly.
