Contact lenses and eyelash extensions – every stylist’s dilemma
Many lash technicians ask themselves whether wearing contact lenses rules out eyelash extensions. The answer is no—let’s make that clear once and for all. Wearing contact lenses is not a contraindication to wearing eyelash extensions.

Contraindications for eyelash extensions
What absolutely excludes a client from a lash styling treatment?
- Eye infections (conjunctivitis, stye, etc.)
- Recent injuries to the eye or eyelids
- After eye surgeries, e.g. laser vision correction
- Severe allergic reactions
Contact lenses during eyelash extensions
Although wearing contact lenses itself is not a contraindication for eyelash extensions, the question still arises: what about contact lenses during the lash treatment?
Discussions often arise on social media and forums. Why are some lash technicians against leaving lenses in during the treatment?
- Absorption of fumes: Contact lenses, especially soft (hydrogel) ones, tend to absorb moisture. Cyanoacrylate adhesive fumes seek moisture to polymerise. If a lens “absorbs” these fumes, it may irritate the cornea, and the lens itself may become cloudy or cause discomfort after the treatment.
- Dry eye syndrome: During the treatment, the client’s eye does not blink, which naturally dries the surface of the lens. This may lead to a “gritty” sensation under the eyelids even during application.
- Mechanical safety: When taping down the lower lashes or applying eye pads, there is a risk of slightly shifting the lens, which can be stressful and uncomfortable for the client with closed eyes.
- Protective barrier: Some clients (and stylists) believe that the lens provides an additional protective layer for the cornea against fumes. However, this is a debatable claim and depends on individual sensitivity.
- Psychological comfort: Clients with strong vision impairments often feel insecure without lenses, especially when they need to get up from the treatment bed and walk to a mirror or reception area.
Preparing for eyelash extensions with contact lenses
Regardless of whether you are for or against performing eyelash extensions with contact lenses, proper lash preparation and the use of high-quality products are key.

Before starting separation, the lashes must be thoroughly cleansed. Choose gentle products with natural ingredients. Bio Foam Lash Cleanser is a gentle formula that effectively removes impurities and sebum without irritating the eye’s mucous membrane—crucial if the client chooses to keep their lenses in.
If you know your client has particularly sensitive eyes or wears contact lenses, choosing the right adhesive can be essential. In such cases, it is worth opting for products with reduced fume emission.
Sensitive Adhesive (3g, hypoallergenic) is a product designed for sensitive eyes, and its formula minimises the risk of stinging and watering.

Your technique – your choice
Remember, your salon operates under your rules. If you are concerned about damaging the lens, you can proactively ask the client to remove their lenses before the treatment—just make sure to inform them in advance!
If, however, you prefer not to set strict rules, always keep gentle products on hand to minimise the risk of irritation and lens damage.
