Common lash styling issues – how to deal with watery eyes and twitching eyelids?
The treatment is planned, the lash map is ready, you sit comfortably and start the application. Suddenly, you notice a tear rolling out from under your client’s eyelid. Sounds familiar? Complications during lash extensions happen to everyone, but the key to success is recognizing the cause quickly.
Watery eyes – how to stop the chain reaction?
Tears during the treatment are often caused by mechanical or chemical irritation. The most common culprit is the gel pad. When a tear flows under the pad, the gel swells, starts irritating the eye and attracts lash adhesive fumes. This creates a vicious cycle that can lead to serious irritation.
Your solution: If the pad has swollen, replace it immediately. You can swap it for aloe under-eye pads, micropore tape or foam tape, which do not contain a gel layer and are gentler on the delicate eye area.
An eyelid that won’t stay closed and client safety
Watery eyes are often caused by the client slightly opening their eye unconsciously while relaxing. Even a tiny gap is enough for adhesive fumes to get inside, causing stinging and irritation of the cornea.
- Use a mirror: Regularly check whether the eye is fully closed from below.
- Artificial crease: When lifting the eyelid, avoid pulling the tape all the way to the forehead. Instead, create a small fold in the tape that lifts the eyelid without opening it.
- Extra support: In more difficult cases, you can gently press the eyelid down with the pad or attach a few lower lashes to the pad to keep the eye still.
Lash Tip: Lifting tape improves visibility of the lash line – place it above the eyelid crease to gently lift the skin and get better access during application.

How to eliminate eyelid twitching?
There may be several reasons for a “nervous” eyelid – from overly bright lamp light to sensitivity to helper products. If your client struggles with eyelid twitching:
- Reduce the light intensity: Switch to a warmer tone or lower the lamp’s brightness.
- Relaxation and massage: A relaxed client means a calmer eyelid. A gentle temple massage before the treatment can work wonders.
- Nano mister: If stinging appears without tears, use a nano mister to neutralize adhesive fumes and bring immediate relief.
