How to Improve Lash Glue Retention? Secrets to Long-Lasting Eyelash Extensions

09 - 10 - 2025

The durability of eyelash extensions depends on proper preparation, working conditions, and choosing the right glue. Discover how to improve lash retention, avoid common mistakes, and achieve long-lasting results.

In this article you will learn:

How to properly prepare natural lashes for application?

When to use a lash cleaner and primer?

How to choose the right adhesive for your working conditions and maintain its performance?

How to avoid harmful glue fumes during lash application?

What health conditions can affect lash retention?

What is shock polymerization in lash styling?

Perfect lash retention is not just about choosing the right adhesive. It’s a combination of proper preparation, stable working conditions, precision, and conscious product use.

1. Preparing Natural Lashes

A perfectly clean natural lash is the foundation of long-lasting application. Unwashed lashes cause the glue to slip and shorten the retention time.

How to properly clean lashes?

Use a double cleansing method:

  1. First, cleanse the eye area with micellar water (non-oily).
  2. Then use a lash shampoo to remove dust and impurities.
  3. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

During infills, use a wide, disposable applicator soaked in micellar water to clean between the lashes precisely.

Tip iconTip: Don’t forget the lower lid and waterline – leftover makeup can transfer to the upper lashes and weaken the glue bond.

2. Disinfecting Lash Strips

Before application, clean the lash strip with a disinfecting solution using an applicator. Once dry, gently brush the lashes with a lash brush. This simple step improves safety and hygiene during work.

3. Supporting Products – When to Use Them?

Cleaner

Used to degrease natural lashes. Apply only in specific cases:

  • when the client has oily skin or hormonal imbalance,
  • when the glue doesn’t bond immediately despite proper cleansing.

Tip iconTIP: Don’t wipe all lashes at once. Degrease only the section you’re working on for the next 15 minutes – sebum appears cyclically and may require reapplication.

Primer

Use when you want to speed up glue bonding time – especially in fast-paced work or less favorable conditions.

4. Lash Glue – The Heart of the Application

Choosing the right lash glue and controlling your workspace conditions are key to perfect retention. The glue should act like a magnet, bonding quickly and securely depending on humidity and temperature.

Optimal humidity: 48–52%.

Use a hygrometer to monitor conditions consistently.

  • If humidity is too high – glue bonds too quickly.
  • If humidity is too low – glue bonds too slowly.

You can adjust this by:

  • using a humidifier,
  • air conditioning,
  • or applying primer to natural lashes.

Tip iconTIP: Choose glues with a wide working range (e.g., 30–80% humidity) for stable performance under any conditions.

5. Glue Consistency and Drop Replacement Frequency

Thinner glue is easier to work with – it ensures a cleaner and more precise application. Thickened glue may cause stickiness and product excess.

How often should you replace the glue drop?

  • Autumn/Winter: every 20–30 minutes.
  • Summer: even every 5 minutes – glue thickens faster in higher temperatures.

6. Glue Storage and Preparation

Replace your glue every 3–4 weeks – older glue loses its properties. Before each use, shake the bottle for at least 15 seconds. The first two drops after opening are not suitable for work, as they contain volatile components that may weaken the bond.

After every application, clean the glue nozzle to prevent drying and sealing issues.

Tip iconTIP: If you want to skip shaking, choose the No Shake Glue – an innovative, ready-to-use formula that maintains stable consistency.

7. Hygiene and Workplace Safety

Ensure proper ventilation in your workspace. After each client, air out the room to refresh the air and reduce glue vapor exposure.
Remember, each glue drop evaporates – therefore, always neutralize it with water after work using a squeeze bottle. It’s crucial for both your health and client comfort.

Also, be mindful of air purity – strong fragrances, hairspray, or nail products can affect glue composition, causing faster thickening or weaker bonding. Whenever possible, separate the lash station from other beauty areas or ensure proper air circulation.

8. Amount of Glue and Application Technique

Control the amount of glue you pick up – your hand should always rest steadily. Too much glue causes:

  • stickiness,
  • an uneven look,
  • and prolonged drying time.

Tip iconTIP: In the 1:1 method, dip the lash at a 45° angle, and for volume fans, straight (90°) – this ensures even glue distribution.

9. Clients Requiring Special Attention

Certain health factors can affect lash retention:

  • hormonal imbalances,
  • pregnancy or menstruation,
  • antibiotic therapy (wait approx. one month after completion).

For retention issues, apply cleaner locally every 15 minutes. In cases of hormonal disorders such as thyroid issues – if lashes continue to shed despite adjustments, it’s better to postpone the application.

10. Shock Polymerization

Sometimes clients tear up due to light sensitivity, misplaced pads, or glue fumes. This can cause shock polymerization – the glue cures too quickly, weakening retention.

That’s why the following are essential:

  • proper room conditions,
  • good ventilation,
  • and awareness of client reactions during application.
